What exactly is a LithoLamp?

A LithoLamp is created using white plastic, an LED light, and 3D printing technology. It is composed of four images known as lithophanes. A lithophane is an etched piece of material where the art can only be seen clearly when the object is back lit with a light source. The image comes off as a detailed black and white image.

How does the printer do this?

After the four images are received, they are put through special software to create a 3D image using the contrast of the image. That software is then uploaded to the printer where the printer spends hours meticulously building the lamp from the ground up. The lamp is created using over 10,000 layers of plastic each the thickness of a sheet of paper.

How does light alone create an image?

The brightness of light shown through an object is affected by the density and thickness of the object the light is being shown through. Using this science, the 3D printer makes the darker parts of the picture thicker, sometimes by less than the thickness of a sheet of paper, in order to create a darker scenery.
